Braided and loc hairstyles, among the Black community, have such a rich history. They are more than just protective hairstyles but a way of celebrating our tradition, creativity, and diversity. Braided hairstyles have been passed down from generation to generation and act as cherished heirlooms—most braided hairstyles, such as tribal braids, date back to ancient Africa. Tribal braids are characterized by unique patterns such as zigzags, triangles, or various geometrical patterns that were popular among the Himba people. In ancient Africa, certain hairstyles were used to showcase or represent one’s tribe, age, and religion. Today, Black women still embrace their cultural roots by incorporating various braided hairstyles. In this article, I’ll focus on the various braided hairstyles that can inspire your next look.
Goddess Braids
Goddess braids, also known as boho braids, are among the latest sensations that have taken braided hairstyles by storm. So, what are goddess braids? Goddess braids give off a bohemian look or boho chic aesthetic. Personally, goddess braids exude grace and power. There are various variations of goddess braids, including boho bob, Fulani boho braids, and boho braids with braids.
Island Twist Braids
Island twist braids are another one of my favorite hairstyles. They closely resemble goddess braids, only that they incorporate twisted braids instead of knotless braids or box braids. This hairstyle is perfect for the summer as it protects one’s natural hairstyle and makes a bold fashion statement.
Lemonade braids
You know what they say: make lemonade when life gives you lemons. And in this case, make lemonade braids. If your natural hair is becoming unmanageable, you should consider getting lemonade braids. Beyonce inspired these braids when she wore them in her 2016 Lemonade album. Lemonade braids have a side-swept appearance and feature medium-sized to small cornrows that cascade to one shoulder. The album showcased her rocking this unique and stylish look. This is another perfect hairstyle for the summer.
Faux locs
Faux locs, also known as false dreadlocks, are perfect for self-expression and celebrating one’s diversity. So what are fox locs? They are false dreadlocks that imitate traditional dreadlocks; they are different from conventional dreadlocks in that they are temporary and very versatile. They come in various forms, including soft locs and boho locs. They are a great protective hairstyle, especially for winter. Boho locs, which incorporate curls to regular faux locs, are one of my favorite hairstyles.
French curl braids
French curl braids are ideal for grand occasions such as birthdays, weddings, and Christmas. French curl braids were famous during the 90s and have now returned to the braided hairstyle scene. They have gained immense popularity on social media platforms such as TikTok and Pinterest. Although French curl braids are achieved using synthetic braid extensions, they have a silky appearance that mimics human hair. So if you have a special occasion, then French curl braids are perfect for you.

Invisible locs
Most individuals often confuse invisible locs with faux locs, but this is not actually the case. Faux locs and invisible locs use different techniques and hair extensions. Invisible locs are made using synthetic hair extensions, such as Marley hair or Cuban twist hair, which is not the case for faux locs. Here are some of the invisible loc styles that you can rock:
Cornrows hairstyles
Cornrows are a great protective hairstyle. With Cornrows, you can incorporate various styles and patterns. They are low-manipulation and low-maintenance. Tribal cornrow patterns are my favorite cornrow hairstyles, and they can incorporate various designs and textures, including zig-zag, geometric shapes, and triangles. You can also do straight-back cornrows, which have gained popularity recently. To make them more fun and appealing, you can add accessories such as curls or beads. The choice is all yours.
Jumbo braids
Jumbo braids, also known as large braids, are regular braids. The only difference is that they are prominent in appearance. Because of their large size, they are a great protective hairstyle and less damaging to one’s hair. Again, you can incorporate various designs or accessories, including beads or curls.
Personal Experience with Braided Hairstyles
Whenever I have a new hairstyle and walk into the office on a Monday morning, there is often bewilderment and an element of surprise when it comes to my new look or braided hairstyle that I am rocking. It often bewilders individuals from other cultures how fast I can switch between my hairstyles. Sometimes, kids want to touch my hair or are surprised by a vibrant color that I am rocking on my head; I don’t know how to feel about that. In some instances, some hairstyles are not deemed appropriate or professional. Still, I am glad we are quickly changing the narrative by embracing hair inclusivity and accepting braided hairstyles as the norm. The CROWN Act, which prohibits the discrimination of individuals based on their hair, has led to inclusivity and acceptance of various protective hairstyles in the workplace and schools.
